Tresor is a story that directly reflects the state of Berlin after the fall of the wall in 1991 and the club’s original space was instrumental in the development of the current techno scene both in the city and internationally. Fueled by the records coming out of Detroit and Chicago, Berlin would become the epicentre of the techno universe and a destination for music lovers looking for the purist form of clubbing where who you are, how much money you have or who you know doesn’t matter. Techno would become the soundtrack for reunification.
Closed in 2005 and torn down due to redevelopment and gentrification, Tresor would rise out of the rubble two years later in a new space that would once again put the club back into the hearts and minds of techno travellers from across the globe. Resident Advisor sits down with club owner, cultural activist and visionary Dimitri Helgeman to discuss the legacy of Tresor and its impact on Berlin. Only restorative art, Helgeman asserts, “can save old cities from vanishing into meaninglessness.”
